Husband refuses to buy pregnant wife a gift on Mother's Day: 'She doesn't qualify'

A man has been labelled "petty" and "selfish" for refusing to buy his wife a Mother's Day present, and his reason is enough to justify the criticism.

Posting to Reddit, the dad-to-be explained that he didn't want to get his pregnant wife a Mother's Day present as she didn't "qualify".

"My wife mentioned today that she wanted a Mother's Day present this year, even though our baby isn't due for almost a month later," the man wrote.

"I told her that I was absolutely not going to get her a Mother's Day present until next year, when we actually have a baby."

The man explained that his main problem was the fact that his wife seemed to expect a gift.

"I think it's absurd to expect a present for a holiday that you don't qualify for," he said. "Where do you draw the line?! Would you expect a Mother's Day gift if you were in a childless relationship but had pets."

Understandably, the post has received some harsh feedback.

"It's wild to me when people have a chance to do something nice for someone they claim to love and they would rather be petty and selfish instead," one person wrote.

"Nowhere does OP (original poster) indicate that his wife wants something huge or expensive, just an acknowledgment of her impending motherhood from her husband," they added.

"How hard is it to do something nice for your partner that you love?", questioned another.

Another called the man out for being "sneeringly pedantic".

"Getting all sneeringly pedantic about [your wife] being "not actually a mother" is just a complete jacka-- move when you could be an actual good husband and decent human being and treat her a little," they wrote.

The man's post also opened up an interesting conversation about when a Mother's Day present should or shouldn't be warranted.

"This guy reminds me of my father, who didn't give my mum Mother's Day gifts because she wasn't his mother," one person commented.

A second person revealed: "I've never been pregnant and my partner AND his kids ALWAYS got me Mother's Day stuff...They're not even BIOLOGICALLY MY KIDS and still they all went to the effort."

A third simply wrote: "I believe that all pregnant people deserve a little gift because being pregnant sucks."
