Emma Watkins recalls the 'brutally honest' comment she received from six-year-old

She's been a children's entertainer for over 13 years, so Emma Watkins has experienced her fair share hilarious moments with kids.

Though one incident in particular stands out in her mind, where she was taken a back by a child's brutal yet confident honesty.

"I remember it very vividly. It was a cracker," she told 9Honey Parenting.

Watkins who is now better known as Emma Memma, said it happened years ago when she was teaching dancing.

"I was teaching six-year-olds, or maybe even younger at that time. And I would each every Saturday and Sunday," she recalled.

"One particular class, I must have been really busy and arriving late and I hadn't really got dressed the way I usually would. I don't think I had makeup on or anything."

And some of the girls in the class noticed, curiously and candidly asking her why.

"Miss Emma, why do you look so different? Why do you look so ugly?" the student came up to her and said.

Watkins was so surprised by the comment that all she could think of to say was "thank you" and let out a big laugh.

"We have such a funny position as a children's entertainer that you do get those really raw occasions when children are really excited to tell you something," she tells 9Honey Parenting.

Confirming that parents aren't the only ones that have to bear the brunt of kids' honesty.

Watkins, who is currently meeting young fans on a book tour through New South Wales and Queensland for her book Emma Memma: How Are You?, says she takes her hat off to every parent who is a 'children's entertainer' in their own respect.

The former Wiggle knows full well that it's a tough gig, "Being able to be the ringleader and the main star event and constantly doing a job."

Her advice after working with kids for so long is to just "do whatever you can".

"Sometimes parents may feel overwhelmed and worry about if they can entertain their child. But at the end of the day, children are just happy that their parent is doing that. Regardless if if he can sing in tune or not."

And when they need that extra bit of help, she says they can turn to her book - something Watkins and her husband Oliver do when looking after her two nephews aged four and two.

"I'm just constantly amazed at the recognition they have with pictures in the book and their real life situation. They point at the animals in the book and we make up an animal song between us and then walk outside and point to different things."

If all else fails, she says her Emma Memma Sticker Activity Book can buy parents a good 30 minutes or so or peace.

"Stickers are just a highlight. Stickers seem to be a big deal!"
