AFL star Eddie Betts watched his wife Anna Scullie give birth to twins over FaceTime on his mobile phone before a match on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old Adelaide player then went out and played a winning game (with Adelaide beating St Kilda by 49 points at Etihad Stadium).

Betts told Channel Seven reporters he was sitting in the lobby when he received the FaceTime call from Anna – an unexpected one, as the twins weren't due until later this month.

"She rang me this morning and she said, I'm going into labour," he said.

"I was in the hotel and I said, 'What do you want me to do, get on the flight?'

"And she said, 'No, the doc said they're going to be out in half an hour so you're going to miss it anyway."

"No names yet but I've got two beautiful daughters," he added, saying both girls were happy and healthy.

It was frustrating not to be there for the birth of his daughters, Betts said, but Anna 'gave him permission' to play. And play he did.

After the game, Adelaide coach Don Pyke told media Betts was "on a natural high" for the entire match. He scored his first three goals for the season, and played a key role in the team's victory.

"He came out and did his role tonight," Pyke said, according to the Herald Sun.

"The birth of your children is always something that brings great joy and delight to you and he’s a very proud man, Eddie."

He has praised her publicly for supporting his football career, as with her move from Victoria to Adelaide at the end of the 2013 season.

“Annie gave up everything – and it was hard for her," he told The Advertiser in 2016.

"She had a great job. She had all her friends outside football. She had to leave everything because of my career."

The couple have now have four children, including their sons, Lewis, five, and Billy, two.
