'Be aware': Mum's warning to parents after daughter's car seat catches on fire

A mum has released a video showcasing how her daughter's car seat caught on fire to avoid it happening to any other parent.

"To all the parents out there, just be aware of how quickly this can happen," mum-of-two Natausha Furlong captioned the clip which has been viewed over one million times.

Furlong was so shocked she recorded the fire as it was occurring, revealing it was her nine-year-old who figured out what started it – the reflection of the sun from a mirror.

"I'm so glad it didn't happen while my daughter was strapped in."

The video starts with the mum advising all parents watch the clip to be aware it could also happen to their car seat.

"I didn't even know this was a thing until it literally just happened," she tells viewers, explaining it was the summer heat and sun that triggered the fire.

Furlong explains she had just opened her car door to put her daughter in her seat when she noticed smoke coming from the site.

"Her car seat is on fire from the heat!" she says, showing the small flames coming out from the material.

She then turns the camera to show the small mirror strapped in front of the baby seat on the passenger seat head rest, commonly installed so parents can see their children in the rearview mirror while driving.

"My nine-year-old figured it out. It's the mirror casting on this," she explains, showing how the reflection of the sun on the mirror was causing the fire.

"Can you imagine if she was sitting in her seat?"

Thousands of shocked thanked the mum for sharing the notice, many saying they had the exact same seat set-up in their car.

"Thank you for bringing this to my attention. That would've never crossed my mind!" one person wrote.

Another commented, "This is nuts. I would never have thought about this. Good tip."

One parent questioned the manufacturer of the seat, writing, "Why aren't car seats made out of non flammable material?"

Furlong responded, confirming the manufacturer had reached out to her over Instagram, offering a replacement cover for the seat in response to the incident.

In a later video she also revealed she has thrown out the mirror to avoid it happening again.
