Sydney mum wants to open anti-vaccination childcare

A mum of two from Sydney's northern beaches wants to set up anti-vaccine child care to get around the potential extension of NSW's 'No Jab No Play' laws.

Heidi Street posted in secret anti-vax Facebook group, 'Vaccine Free Australia' asking its 5000 members for "expressions of interest" in family day care at her house, two days a week for up to four children.

"I'm supporting the family's who have concerns regarding vaccinations", she told 9Honey.

"Many families choose not to vaccinate due to the risks involved, many families have had severe reactions. Vaccine injury is real and has effected thousands of families", she added

In the anti-vax childcare ad, Street says she has "a strong passion for children's health and wellbeing" and "a beautiful nurturing soul".

"Children's days would be spent among nature", she added. "A walk to the beach, learning through play and games, art and craft, yoga."

"Please let me know if this interests you".

She said the post was in direct response to 'No Jab, No Play' legislation which, she says, could see unimmunised children thrown out of childcare centres.

"If these laws come into place, we are denying these children of an education which is an infringement on our basic rights", she said.

"I'm just creating a solution to the problem . If our society does not want our unvaccinated children in childcare centres, than this simply offers a place for the unvaccinated children to go." 

Unimmunised children are currently welcome at childcare centres, although NSW laws stipulate that children should be vaccinated, unless a child has a medical condition or their parents object.

Parents on the Facebook group were quick to 'like' the post. Many commented that they'd like to see similar schemes in other parts of the country.

But, medical professionals say anti-vax childcare could put everyone at risk.

Dr Penny Adams told the TODAY show this morning that unimmunised children are "at risk of developing serious and even life-threatening illnesses because they're not vaccinated".

"We know vaccinations are 85-90 percent effective", she added.

Dr Adams said that vulnerable people and the elderly are at risk if children are not immunised against fatal diseases such as measles and mumps.

"There is no merit at all in the anti-vaccine argument", she told Lisa Wilkinson.

Three million lives were saved in Australia last year due to vaccinations, she said.
