Controversial UK MP Emma Dent Coad says ‘too much money’ is spent on Prince George

A UK politician has caused outrage by claiming that “too much money” is spent on Prince George.

Emma Dent Coad, who is MP for Kensington and has previously described herself as “The royal family’s worst nightmare” caused backlash recently when she openly mocked Prince Harry’s military service. According to the Express, the politician wrongly told an anti-monarchy event at Labour’s conference that Harry could not fly an Apache helicopter, adding: “He just sits there going, ‘Vroom vroom’.”

Prince Harry qualified as an Apache helicopter commander in 2013.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Coad admitted that her statement may have been inaccurate, saying: “I actually also said, ‘I have been told this [about Prince Harry], but if I have made a mistake I will hold my hands up’.”

She is now facing backlash after comments about four-year-old Prince George. Express reports that during a Labour party conference, Hoad said: “When Prince George goes to school, they (the media) look at his jumpers and, you know, £150 ($A256) for a jumper, that’s a food bill for a family of four for a lot of people and that’s outrageous and people are outraged by that.”

Coad has previously targeted George’s mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, with similar accusations. She said Catherine’s shopping habits were “outrageous” and that she wasn’t the best person for the “job” of Duchess of Cambridge.

“God what a tedious job. Is she the best person for the job? Would you give her £19million a year to do that job? I don’t think so, but that’s what we’re doing, we’re giving her £19million a year to spend on her clothing.”

She even laid into Prince Philip’s relationship with the Queen, saying “He’s been quite unfaithful for quite a few years.”

Since then, Coad has backtracked somewhat on her remarks, saying: “I was just poking fun. But we need a proper debate about the royal family. It’s about taxpayer funding. Why are taxpayers funding them? Why can’t I disagree? It seems like we are not allowed to have an opinion.”

The MP, whose constituency is in the same borough of the Grenfell Tower, also posted a tweet with her “response to the past 48 hours”.
