This statement from Prince Charles left Diana 'traumatised'
Princess Diana was left traumatised after a public comment made by her then-fiance Prince Charles.
In new footage, released as part of new documentary Diana: In Her Own Words, the Princess of Wales discusses her marriage and life in the royal family. The documentary is based on private recordings between Diana and her voice coach Peter Settelen, recorded between 1992 and 1993.
She recalled how one comment in particular from Charles left a lasting impression.
Talking to an ITN reporter on the day of their engagement, in 1981, the Prince of Wales said he was "just delighted and happy" to announce the engagement.
"And I suppose in love?," the reporter then went on to ask.
Diana said: "Of course".
But Charles answered: "Whatever 'in love' means. You can put your own interpretation there."
The footage was broadcast on national TV, and has since been used in countless articles about their marriage.
