Deb Knight's faith in Gen Z restored with simple initiative

We sometimes bemoan the younger generation for not pulling their weight as much as they should. 

The Millennials, the Gen X's or the Generation Alpha's as the kids born before 2010 are called - putting themselves before others. 

Then you meet someone like Xander Wallace.

Xander is a Year 9 Sydney High School student. He's 15 years old, and he's come up with the most generous and heartwarming idea to brighten the day of older people in aged care. 

Xander has opted to complete a Bronze Service Learning Award through his school, where students receive recognition for completing some form of community service. 

He's not required to do it. It's something he's taken on by choice, and he's been inspired by his own grandparents who have recently moved into aged care.

Xander has come up with the idea of collecting flowers from supermarkets and convenience stores that would otherwise be thrown out. They still have some life in them, but are not of a high enough quality to be sold. 

He then spends an hour or so several times a week arranging the flowers into bouquets, puts them into vases, and then takes the floral arrangements to nursing homes in his local area. Literally giving flowers a new lease of life. 

The response has been extraordinary. He says "it made me especially happy seeing the residents smile when I brought them in. It really made me understand how hard being in a nursing home can be and how little things can make a big difference".

This simple but beautiful act of generosity has brightened the day of hundreds of aged care residents, and Xander would like other young people to get involved as well. 

He's set up a Facebook charity page called Elderflowers, with videos and photos of the work he's doing, and he's hoping to share what he's learned with others, so more flowers can be given a new lease of life, and brighten the day of those in aged care. 

What a simple yet heartwarming act! The next generation is in good hands with young men like Xander.
