'Today's world is overwhelmed with choices, but this one is possibly the hardest to make'

It's always great to have options, but choice can be crippling. 

My family is old school with the weekly food shop. A notepad and pen is left in the kitchen for items that are needed – or coveted – to be picked up at the local supermarket.

Coco Pops always end up on the list, despite rarely being bought.

My teenage son, who is on a fitness kick, recently added an air fryer to the list.

It's rare to have an appliance in the mix of fruit juice and chocolate biscuit requests, but an air fryer is something I have been considering, even though I'm skeptical that we need anything more than our current oven to do the trick. 

Do we really need another appliance on the already crowded real estate that is our kitchen bench? 

A bit like when the Thermomix first came out, air fryer owners can be very passionate about how essential and life changing the appliance can be.

I like the idea of an air fryer being able to create fast and healthy snacks that the kids can make themselves, particularly when the end of the school day hunger hits. 

So I started the search, and the usual feeling of confusion set in. 

A simple Google search of 'which is the best air fryer' only served to make the choice more confusing.

Did I need a smart appliance that I could operate via bluetooth? Would a 3-litre model be large enough? What about a double drawer or single?

Could I get away with spending $60, or do I take the leap and spend $600? 

Working out which product to buy, or which service provider to go with, can be really difficult when the array of options seems endless. 

I've subscribed to the consumer watchdog Choice to help cut through the confusion of working out the best appliance or product, but even that is subjective and never cut and dry.

One person might love their Kmart air fryer, while another swears by their high-end Philips gadget.

Turning to online reviews is fraught because of the number of dodgy self-interested parties muddying the waters by spruiking something they're set to benefit from by talking up. 

I've opted for a cheaper mid-range model to try out if air frying is really the way to go before diving in completely.

Who knows – I might become one of those passionate proponents of the new appliance that has changed my life!
