Danish royal family make a splash at medieval festival

It might have been wet, but the Danish royal family were all smiles as they welcomed participants of the annual ring riding competition.

The royal family stood outside the gates at Graasten Castle in Denmark to greet those entering the annual competition — a traditional medieval art of tilting in South Jutland, where competitors ride horseback with lances towards a ring of reducing size.

Princess Mary of Denmark was joined by husband, Crown Prince Frederik, and their children Prince Christian, 11, Princess Isabella, 10, and twins Princess Josephine, 6, and Prince Vincent, 6.

Queen Magrethe was also in attendance, dressed in a colourful floral rain jacket and matching hat. She and daughter-in-law Princess Mary of Denmark were seen chatting and laughing.

However, notably absent was the Queen's husband, Prince Henrik.

His Royal Highness was reportedly admitted to hospital last week to have an infection in his leg treated.

A press release from the palace said the Prince was expected to be released over the weekend but due to the admission, he had cancelled appointments in official programs in the coming days.
