Nurse's harsh words for South Australians in six-day lockdown: 'It's not about you'

A nurse has shared her frustration with "entitled" South Australians who are complaining about the new six-day lockdown in their state.

SA began its six-day "circuit-breaker" lockdown yesterday, closing all schools and forcing people to stay inside in a bid to stop the spread of a second wave of coronavirus.

But some SA locals weren't happy with the shutdown, venting their annoyance online as the state enforces harsh restrictions.

According to nurse Danielle Abbott, who works at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide, those people are just being entitled.

The young nurse has been working with coronavirus patients throughout the pandemic and called out South Australians opposed to restrictions designed to stop a second wave.

''I'm too entitled to stay at home for six days," she wrote alongside a photo of herself in PPE on Facebook.

Abbott then shared insight into what it's like for medical staff still battling the virus in hospitals around the state – and the nation.

"This is what we wear. New PPE as we enter a patient's room, and we throw it out as we leave; repeat. It's not about you."

Her last comment suggested that those South Australians complaining about the six-day lockdown are forgetting how important it is in preventing a second wave.

Even as case numbers remain low, there are many high-risk groups that would suffer incredibly if the virus were to take hold in SA again — people like the hospital patients Abbott works with every day.

Her post was soon flooded with messages of support and love, as well as comments sharing her frustration with SA residents objecting to the brief lockdown.

The state's Premier Steven Marshall has voiced a similar sentiment about the lockdown, saying yesterday: "There is no second chance to stop a second wave."

Locals frustrated with the lockdown have pointed out that the oirignally planned restrictions were some of the harshest in the world.

Those rules have since been amended following the news that the hard lockdown will end early.

SA will revert to a "series of restrictions" very similar to the measures imposed at the beginning of the week on midnight on Saturday.

However, the SA government has reiterated that swift, decisive action is the best bet for preventing a second wave of the virus.

UPDATE: Lockdown will ease in South Australia sooner than planned with the stay-at-home measures lifted from midnight on Saturday, Premier Steven Marshall has announced.

Premier Marshall said the restrictions easing comes despite one of the close contacts linked to the Woodville pizza bar 'deliberately misleading' the state's contract tracing team.
