'We need our neighbours': NSW town hosts socially-distanced 'dance party' during lockdown

Dance parties may break every self-isolation and social-distancing law under the sun, but that hasn't stopped one small NSW town from 'getting down' during coronavirus.

Just outside our nation's capital, the small town of Googong has taken to the streets to participate in a 'dance cam', with neighbours showing off their flashest moves in their driveways as a roving car captures the whole moment.

The makeshift dance party began when 23-year-old Taylor Cannell took inspiration from 'kiss cams' at sporting events.

"The crowd is always so entertained and engaged when the cam goes on at half time, so I thought why not do the same thing in my town?" she tells 9Honey.

Posting the idea to her local community's Facebook page, Cannell was met with an overwhelming response.

"My family kept bagging me out think it was a weird idea," she laughs, "but then 13 streets immediately responded and said they were keen!"

Cannell drove through her neighbourhood's streets in the car with her camera in tow, capturing families, singles and couples alike performing all kinds of routines - rehearsed and freestyle.

"Seeing people express themselves creatively is what I wanted from this, and we really saw it," she says.

Having previously worked at a dance studio and youth organisation prior to the pandemic, Cannell wanted to find a way to maintain a level of unity during the lockdown period.

"During this time we need our neighbours. We're made to exist as a community," she says.

The videos, posted on Cannell's Facebook page, have quickly gained the adoration of local residents and social media users alike.

The two clips have since been shared over 700 times, with their high-energy participants receiving glowing praise.

"Love love love this .... put a smile on my dial!" wrote one Facebook user.

"Good on you Googong! This is just one of the reasons I love living here," commented another.

Others contemplated a move to the regional town.

"Maybe I should move to Googong," pondered one commenter.

In Cannell's latest post, residents braved the six-degree brisk May weather to continue shaking and grooving in the spirit of community.

"We might have to return in the summertime when things heat up," she says.

"Who knows… maybe even then we can turn them into a real party to celebrate the end of the pandemic?"
