Teacher, 30, dies of coronavirus after being turned away from emergency rooms twice

A 30-year-old New York teacher has died of coronavirus after being turned away from emergency departments twice.

After after a painstaking process to have her symptoms taken seriously, Rana Zoe Mungin passed away on Monday at 12:25pm.

The social studies teacher contracted coronavirus in mid-March, and had two pre-existing conditions — asthma and hypertension — which put her at high risk for developing a severe case.

Despite having a fever and shortness of breath, Mungin was turned away from emergency rooms twice.

Her sister Mia — a registered nurse — told Pix11 one paramedic believed she was just having a "panic attack."

"He insinuated she was having a panic attack. She kept saying 'I can't breathe'," said Mia.

Finally admitted on March 20 after returning for the third time, Mungin was immediately intubated and put on a ventilator.

Seeing the situation was dire, Mia mounted a campaign to have Mungin included in the clinical trial for remdesivir, a possible coronavirus treatment.

"My sister Rana Zoe Mungin has COVID-19 and is fighting for her life, and she is currently on life support," she tweeted.

"She's only 30 years old and has such a bright future ahead of her. I'm begging for some help to get her on the new drug Remdesivir or any help you can provide."

Despite the message reaching New York Senator Chuck Schumer, who appealed to the Food and Drug Administration, Mungin was knocked back.

Sadly on April 27 after more than a month on a ventilator, the teacher passed away, with her sister sharing the sad news on Twitter.

"It is with heavy heart that I have to inform you all that my sister Rana Zoe Maybe has passed away today at 12:25pm due to COVID-19 complication. She fought a long fight but her body was to weak," Mia tweeted.
