“[At first] it was just a joke,” the girlfriends explained in a YouTube video from media startup Yitiao.

“We [said that we] would get together when we were 60 and live the retired life together.”

But the joke turned into a reality when the group purchased a run-down red brick home near Guangzhou, a major city in southeastern China, and decided to totally remodel it together.

They turned the 3.5 story home into a luxury escape, including a glass-walled 'box' room that looks out over the rice paddies, where the women plan to drink tea together in their later years.

The bottom level of the home includes communal living and dining areas, while the upper storeys have individual rooms for each woman as well as a few spaces to relax together.

They even built a suspended bamboo pavilion over the rice paddies the sit at the front of the home, with a long walkway running from their doorstep to the pavilion.

Explaining that the group have been friends for over 20 years, one of the women said that they've often been "closer than siblings" and hope to keep that close connection when they retire.

“We joke that each of us should practice one skill so that we won’t be lonely and fight with each other 10 years later," she said in the video.

"Some can cook beautiful food, some know traditional Chinese medicine, some play instruments and some grow vegetables.”
