Meet the Australians making money from their caravans

Aussies love a good holiday - and across the country there are almost 680,000 caravans and motor-homes.

For most of the year they sit idle gathering dust, but now there is a new share-economy that could see you pocket thousands of dollars if you have one in your driveway.

"To be able to make money from it and pay for itself is pretty amazing," Faith Davey tells A Current Affair.

The single mother of two bought her motor-home for a family trip of a lifetime, travelling 26,000 kilometres over nine months.

Upon returning to her Melbourne apartment, she realised there was no where to store it, so she listed it for rent on Camplify - which is the "AirBNB of caravans."

Other popular rental platforms include MyCaravan and ShareaCamper.

"Within 24 hours I had four booking requests and the first week I think I had seven," she says, adding: "I've never looked back. It's been really successful."

In fact, Faith's motor-home has been so popular, she has now quit her job and runs her rental business full-time.

Relishing life in the slow lane, Stephanie Keys and Richard Turberville have jumped on board the RV rental market.

"It's the bonding. There's no distractions, there's no phones ringing and iPads and this, that and the next thing. People are just bonding. And it sounds old fashioned, but that's what we do," Richard tells ACA.

The couple has had incredible success, in the past six months they've earned $135,000 in hire income.

Due to high demand, Stephanie and Richard have expanded their fleet from one family caravan to four, and now manage five more on behalf of other owners.

"It gives us time to do things with our children as well as to run a business and produce a good income from it. So it's been a great opportunity," Stephanie tells ACA.

"Vehicles that go on our platform are perfect for the share economy," Justin Hales, CEO of Camplify tells A Current Affair.

"People spend a lot of money acquiring them, most of the time they sit in someone's driveway. People can earn a significant amount of return from hiring them out a few weeks of the year."

Renting out your caravan on their website could see you pocket up to $25,000, while leasing a campervan or camper trailer could earn you an extra $15,000 a year.

Justin says caravans are now an affordable investment and can even be offset against other income.

"People who list on our platform are able to claim the cost of their RV and everything to do with maintenance around it....like they would a holiday house. There's some great tax advantages if you own an RV and you want to list on our platform."

But all the owners say - the extra cash is just a bonus.
