Call or text? Aussies deliver their verdict

Do you prefer to call or text? 

The debate on telecommunications has divided Australia. Is it easier to just call or quicker to text, and are there exceptions?

We asked Aussies what they thought in an exclusive Nine.com.au poll, and the results were divided.

Interestingly, 45 per cent of Aussies prefer to call, with most feeling it is more convenient and personal.  

"I prefer to call and talk to the person rather than text. I can explain very well, if there was something to explain or tell that person my message so there wouldn't be any misunderstanding," one respondent said.

Another respondent feels the popularity of texting means we need to have more meaningful conversations. 

"Texting has made people have a lack of communication and interaction. The world has become one that humans are like robots. Gone are the days," they said. 

Understandably, calling can prevent miscommunication, providing the opportunity for better explanation and a more straightforward discussion.

However, while a phone call can clearly convey the tone of a conversation, it's not usually as fast as texting.

The majority of the survey respondents, 55 per cent, said texting was their preferred form of communication.

"I sometimes try to text instead of phone calling," another said. 

"Texting also has it's down side whereby we could let our guard down and say some[thing] we would not otherwise have normally communicated with others both known well & otherwise."

An overwhelming majority of those who prefer texting said it depends on the nature of the conversation.

"I prefer to text when I need to have proof in writing of a conversation. And call when it is family," one respondent said. 

"Calling or text depends on what I'm trying to do," another added.

Agreeing with that sentiment, one user said: "phone calls depend, calling [is] best [to] talk to someone, but where needed, text can do."

It seems the general consensus is that it depends on the conversation. Most Aussies feel texting can be safer when something needs proofreading, and phone calls are preferred for conversations that need explaining.
