Best Selfie: Superman and Lois' Michael Bishop on being a young Aussie actor making it in Hollywood

Meet Michael Bishop, the Australian actor who has captured hearts with his stellar performance in TV series Superman and Lois.

With his talent and infectious charm, Bishop has quickly become a rising star in the entertainment industry, proving that dreams can come true even for Aussies dreaming of making it in Hollywood.

For Bishop, playing a character in the Superman universe holds a special significance.

"There's a photo of me at, like, age four, dressed up as Superman in a Halloween costume," he told 9Honey.

"I don't know, you manifest this stuff."

Booking the role on Superman and Lois was a pivotal moment for Bishop, who describes it as one of the most exciting days of his life.

"I booked the role five days before shooting," he explains.

"I flew out for a chemistry test from Australia to Vancouver, Canada. I woke up in my hotel, and I got a call from my manager. She was like, 'Michael, you booked the role.'

"It was so cool. I was such a fan of the show, so I was stoked to be a part of it."

Bishop plays Jonathan Kent, the modest, kind-hearted and athletic son of Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) who unlike his younger brother Jordan (Alex Garfin) did not inherit any of his father's Kryptonian superpowers.

The character is named after Clark's adoptive father, Jonathan Kent.

For the first three seasons of Superman and Lois, Jonathan was played by Jordan Elsass, who departed the series due to personal issues, and the role was recast to Bishop.

While Bishop's career took off with Superman and Lois, he had another dream come true when he got the opportunity to work with Disney, starring as Max in the Disney Original Film Spin.

Reflecting on the experience of drawing the iconic Mickey Mouse ears in one promo (pictured below), he says, "That was such an experience, doing the Disney wand. It was a dream come true, and I'm sure it is for many kids."

Growing up watching Disney Channel at his grandparents' house, Bishop never imagined he would one day be a part of it.

"I did not think I would ever actually do it," he adds.

Interestingly, Bishop reveals his famous Disney wand shoot, in which he drew the famous Mickey Mouse logo with a wand, was the first one they shot internationally.

"They flew the wand out, and I actually have [the wand] still somewhere," he says with a mischievous smile.

"I'm sure they're gonna hunt me down for that eventually. But for now, it's still in my home."

Bishop also opened up to 9Honey about a difficult time in his life when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"She decided that she wanted to shave her hair off," he recalls.

"So the three of us, my brothers and myself, we decided to help her out with that. It was a really tough day all around, but honestly, looking back on it now, it's a really beautiful memory."

The opportunity to work on a high-profile Hollywood show like Superman & Lois is a dream come true for any actor.

Bishop acknowledges the challenges of breaking into the industry from Down Under, saying, "It is pretty tough as an Aussie to book big roles like this."

However, he emphasises the importance of perseverance and self-belief.

"I just pinch myself so much. I'm doing this, I'm doing what six-year-old, seven-year-old Michael ... dreamed of. My younger self would be so stoked," he says.

Bishop hopes his success serves as an inspiration to other aspiring Australian actors.

"I hope that it's like a bit of a message to other Aussie up-and-comers that, like, it's possible, like you can do it. There is a place for us in this big Hollywood industry."
