Ben Fordham on Prince Harry and Meghan: 'To publicly chip the Queen like that is not on'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's response to the latest developments in their imminent royal departure has not escaped scrutiny.

Over the weekend, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex addressed the latest details, namely the loss of their 'Sussex Royal' brand name, on their official website.

Their remarks about not being able to use the term 'royal' have been interpreted by some as a dig at the Queen — and it's a view shared by 2GB radio host and Nine TV presenter Ben Fordham.

Speaking on his Drive show on Monday afternoon, Fordham voiced his frustration with the royal couple's latest statement, saying he was "losing patience" with them.

"In their latest stunt, they've taken a swipe at Her Majesty the Queen," he told listeners.

Fordham said although the couple conceded they would drop the word 'royal' from their branding, they "couldn't just leave it at that" in the response posted on their website.

"They had to have a go at the Queen too ... they whinged that Her Majesty doesn't own the word overseas," he added.

In the section of the Sussex Royal website referenced by Fordham, Harry and Meghan explained there is "not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word 'Royal' overseas".

Despite this fact, they added, they would cease to use the phrase from March 31 — the date of their royal departure.

"If that's the case, why do you take a swipe at the Queen on the way through?" Fordham continued.

"I've actually had the pleasure of meeting Prince Harry on one occasion. He was lovely enough to talk to, but now I'm over him.

"To publicly chip the Queen like that is not on, and he should show more respect to his grandmother. You made this decision, mate, not anyone else."

Fordham ended his message by labelling the Duke and Duchess as "spoilt", "out of touch" and "entitled".

The radio host isn't alone in his interpretation of the Sussexes' website statement.

Royal commentator Ingrid Seward said the reference to jurisdiction over the word royal appeared to be a "gratuitous and ungracious swipe at the Queen", the Daily Mail reports.

"It is kind of saying, 'By the way, we know we can use royal if we want to'," she added.

Elsewhere, a source told The Mirror the statement was "petulant" and contained thinly-veiled digs at other royal family members, including Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

Public opinion aside, it seems Harry and Meghan's departure from royal life won't be as quiet as they'd hoped.
