Former US first daughter Barbara Bush welcomes first child

Barbara Bush, the daughter of former US President George W. Bush, has welcomed her first child into the world.

Cora Georgia Coyne was born Monday in Maine, not far from where her parents' had wed, the 43rd president announced in a Tuesday statement.

He and former first lady Laura Bush were "proud and grateful" for the new addition to their family.

"With full hearts, Laura and I are delighted to announce the birth of our new granddaughter," Bush said.

He later added: "Cora is healthy and adorable, and we are proud and grateful."

Barbara's twin sister Jenna Bush Hager was by her sister's side for the special arrival.

She shared a photo on Instagram along with the message: "Dearest Cora Georgia. Today is the day I got to meet my most beautiful, precious, feisty, niece (a bit earlier than we expected!) I witnessed in awe as my dearest, toughest @barbara.p.bush became a mama.

"And today is the day I fell in love! Some cousins are anxiously waiting to play with you, but not just yet love. Xx auntie j"

Barbara Bush, 39, married screenwriter Craig Louis Coyne in 2018 in a private ceremony in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Cora is the Bushes' fourth grandchild.

Jenna Bush Hager, has three children with her husband, Henry Hager — Mila, Poppy and Hal.

Barbara Bush works as an activist and co-founded non profit organisation Global Health Corps. She also co-authored the book Sisters First with Jenna, who is her fraternal twin.

Jenna works as a TV presenter on Today in the US and is also an author.
