Amazon sells hoodie saying Anorexia 'like Bulimia, except with self control'

Amazon is selling a hoodie that describes anorexia as “like bulimia, except with self control”.

The controversial navy jumper reads “Anorexia (an-uh-rek-see-uh) Like Bulimia, except with self control”.

It is being sold for $24.75 to $30 by a company called ArturoBuch and is still available on the US version of the site, despite mounting global outrage.

The online retail giant has come under fire over the “irresponsible” jumper with many experts and eating disorder sufferers asking for it to be taken off the site immediately.

One woman with anorexia warned it could “damage” the mental health of those living with conditions.

“It could be extremely damaging to anyone suffering with either bulimia or anorexia,” she told the BBC.

“I think it could damage their mental health even further and cause them to potentially harm their life.”

Anorexia expert and psychotherapist Susie Orbach is also calling for the immediate removal of the hoodie, which she described as “a way to make people feel really awful” when they are “already anguished enough”.

"This is terribly irresponsible on Amazon's part," she said.

"We're breeding a culture [where people think] you should transform your body, you should comment on it, and if it isn't the way you want it to be it's got to be some other way."

"They really don't need to be making money this way," she added.

The product has been reviewed by 176 customers, with an overwhelming majority condemning the merchandise as “shameful”, “damaging” and “evil”.

“This is disgusting and shameful… making a profit on an illness! This item should be removed,” one person wrote.

“This is not okay. This needs to be deleted ASAP this is disgusting.”

“Are you f----ing kidding me? My son died from anorexia. This is not funny.”

Amazon hasn’t given a statement on the hoodie, but it has been pointed out that you can’t buy this hoodie in the UK.
