'90s icon Aaliyah honoured with her own Barbie doll on what would have been her 46th birthday
Aaliyah's legacy is being honoured in a beautiful way on what would have been the Princess of R&B's 46th birthday.
Mattel has announced a special collector Aaliyah Barbie doll in honour of the late R&B star almost 24 years after she passed away.
Nicknamed the Princess of R&B and the Queen of Urban Pop, the star helped shape the R&B music scene from the '90s onwards with songs like Are You That Somebody? and One In A Million. Music aside, she also became a '90s style icon who many still draw inspiration from today.

In August 2001, when she was just 22 years old, Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash. The news sent shockwaves through the celebrity world and she is still remembered as an icon of the music industry today.
The 16th of January marks what would have been Aaliyah's 46th birthday. Mattel's new release honours the star on this poignant occasion.
"Her legacy transcends music fashion and culture and lives on today," reads Barbie's description of the doll.
"[The] Aaliyah Barbie doll celebrates this influential star."

Barbie teamed up with Aaliyah's brother Rashad Haughton to ensure the doll was designed to accurately remember the late icon.
Haughton spoke with People about the process and the exciting release revealing that while she's no longer with us Aaliyah would be over-the-moon about this new project.
"The universe sort of conspired to make this happen, at such a perfect time," he said.
"I know for a fact that this was something that she had dreamed about since she was a little girl."

The Barbie's outfit draws inspiration from Aaliyah's iconic One in a Million music video.
The Aaliyah Barbie wears a faux leather black top with matching pants and studded lace up details. The look is completed with black sunnies, a zipper vest, detached sleeves and, of course, her hair is swooped to the side.
The doll joins the Barbie Music Collector series which celebrates legendary singers who have had a lasting impact on the industry.
Other musicians honoured by the series include Gloria Estefan, Stevie Nicks, David Bowie, Elvis Presley and Elton John.

Haughton says "it's absolutely amazing" to have his sister honoured among this list of icons.
"It really solidifies her legendary status along with those other legendary singer," he told People.
Aaliyah is undoubtedly a legend, but for Haughton she is the sister he lost. He is touched by the Barbie release and knows she would be too.
"I can see her playing with these dolls wherever she is right now, which I know is heaven and in a beautiful place," he said.
"And she's going to have a doll with her and be doing all the dance moves from One in a Million with it."
