Stuff NZ

Ian Robinson celebrated a milestone by going skydiving, but what makes it unique is he did it on his 90th birthday.

On Tuesday, Robinson took in the Auckland skyline from 18,000 feet in the air. It is the first time he has ever skydived.

Footage of the jump over Skydive Auckland's base at Parakai shows a stunning panaroma of the countryside, coast and the Kaipara Harbour northwest of Auckland city.

Robinson made the tandem jump along with two grandsons, while a large group of supporters waited below for his return to earth.

The jump was no problem at all, he said.

"Even though I've got a heart condition, it didn't affect me in any way whatsoever."

And there was no fear.

"People say, 'wasn't it a bit frightening sitting on the edge (of the plane)?'. No, not at any stage did I feel scared," Robinson said.

It was a great experience, but he's not totally convinced by the freefall at the start.

"The freefall was interesting, but I didn't like the buffeting on my face," he said.

"But once the parachute opened, and you could just relax and look around and see the countryside, that was great."

As well as celebrating his birthday, the jump was a way to raise money for the Heart Foundation.

Robinson had a major heart attack in 2019, and a year later his wife Œnone had a serious heart condition. She had open heart surgery but didn't pull through.

On Wednesday, Robinson said he had raised at least $4000 and the total could get to $5000. His donation page at on the Heart Foundation website would remain open for a few more days.

"People say, 'what would you like to do for your 100th'. I said, 'I wouldn't mind going wing walking', but they don't do that in New Zealand," Robinson said.

"I have 10 years to think about that."
