EXCLUSIVE: Many of us have a tequila story.

But whatever your experience with the infamous Mexican spirit, Minnie Vernon's probably trumps it.

In Stan Original Film One More Shot, Emily Browning plays Minnie, a 30-something hospital anaesthesiologist whose dissatisfaction with life culminates on the eve of the new millennium.

At a friends New Year's Eve party, she discovers a bottle of time travelling tequila, with each shot taking her back to the start of the night – giving her one bottle's worth of shots to win back an old flame and change the course of her 2000s life.

What ensues is a funny, fresh Groundhog Day-style tale, as she continually tries (and continually fails) to make things work out.

Among the failed loops, at one point Minnie finds herself bloody-faced and in another, in a hilariously chaotic stand off with law enforcement.

It's a ride that goes in many different, unexpected and chaotic directions – and the joy of creating it led to a 'first' for Browning.

"It was such a fun movie to make, and such a fun movie to watch as well, which is weird because I don't usually like watching myself that much, but I really liked watching this movie," she laughed to 9Entertainment.

Browning's role as Violet Baudelaire in 2004's Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events alongside greats like Jim Carrey and Meryl Streep made her a dramatic star, but in recent years she's turned much more to comedy.

Initially weary of whether she had it in her, it's now exactly where she wants to be.

EXCLUSIVE: Sonny and Alicia's turmoil as they face reality they're about to break a 'heartbreaking' record

"Something shifted in the last few years where I was like, 'God, I can't think of anything more boring right now than making a straight up drama, like a family drama'. I just cannot. It just sounds like snooze," she said.

"There's always an element of humour in what I want to watch, that's always been true, and I had for a long time been afraid of those kind of projects for myself."

In 2023, she starred in Prime Video comedy Class of '07, an apocalyptical survival comedy that she explained "really opened up" something in her.

"I suddenly became addicted to this feeling of like, I'm totally willing to embarrass myself. And maybe I'll fail. There's maybe something of a thrill seeker in me that's like, 'yeah, all right, I'm gonna go out there and like, look like an idiot and see if it lands'.

"Sometimes it doesn't. A lot of the times it doesn't. And it's realizing that even if it doesn't, I'm still alive and I'm still okay. There's something really nice about that. It's been good for my performance, my work anxiety in general, being like, 'Oh yeah, I can totally fail and not get a laugh and it's fine.'"

Even so, failing to get a laugh is not a worry she needs to have for One More Shot, which sees Minnie becoming increasingly more crazed as the film goes on.

Given her newfound approach to comedy, it's unsurprising that those scenes were Browning's favourites to create.

"[The loop] that was the most fun was once she's like, 'burn it all down,'" she said.

"She is like, 'you know what? This is not working, I guess I'm just gonna start smashing glasses, who cares? Because I can just do it again'. That was really fun, being just completely unhinged."

Tequila as the plot device is a fun choice, given how many of us can relate to having a rather tough time because of it.

But even after all her on-screen swigging, Browning laughed that she hadn't been put off the stuff.

"If I'm going to have a night out and I'm going to be drinking liquor, it would be tequila!"

Hopefully next time, it will be without the time travelling side effects.
