Killer whale drags sailboat by anchor in Canadian marina

A killer whale has been filmed “playing” with a boat moored in a Canadian marina, dragging a sailboat by its anchor.

Ara Stevenson had just returned from a fishing trip when she spotted the orca splashing around in Comox Marina, Vancouver Island.

She whipped out her phone to record the stunning video of the big fella actually dragging the boat along like a kid with a balloon.

Stevenson posted the video to Facebook on Sunday, clocking up more than 300,000 views by Wednesday afternoon.

It looks like the animal is playing but as we learned from a yarn from Jolene Rudisuela at The Columbia valley Pioneer, it’s actually a pretty dangerous situation.

“This type of behaviour resulted in the death of an orca,” Peter Hamilton, founder of environmental organisation Lifeforce said.

“A lone orca, Luna, separated from his family would ‘play’ with boats in Gold River… he was killed by a boat propeller.”

Hamilton urged boaters to take it slow around the creature, with fears it might become too comfortable in the marina.

The orca is believed to be a bit of a blow in, reportedly hanging around the marina for the past week.

It has been given the name T073B as an identifier by researchers.

Locals have been loving watching T073B play around, with the orca become a bit of a celebrity:

But the orca hasn’t loved all the attention.

Another story from Rudisuela, this time published by the Cowichan Valley Citizen, described a few tense moments between T073B and kayakers.

Officials have been monitoring the orca to make sure everyone is keeping a safe distance. 

Hopefully T073B moves on soon before anyone gets hurt.
