Disney airs first animated same-sex kiss in cartoon series
Disney just aired its first animated same-sex kiss and the world is metaphorically throwing glitter and waving a rainbow flag.
Just in time for Mardis Gras, Disney cartoon series Star Vs the Forces of Evil featured perhaps the most important kiss in animated history – yup, even more significant than the one that was planted on the cold, dead lips of Snow White.
Because while Disney has practically built an empire on dudes kissing impossibly good looking girls, same-sex mack ons weren't part of the formula.
It took until 2014 for a same-sex couple to appear in a Disney production, which was live action series Good Luck Charlie. The episode featured a friend of the main character having two mums.
When ads for Finding Dory were released, people spotted two women with a baby and suspected it as the first openly lesbian couple in a Disney feature film.
And they kiiiind of were, depending on your frame of mind.
“They can be whatever you want them to be,” co-director Andrew Stanton said.
“There’s no right or wrong answer.”
But until this week, the world hadn't seen an animated gay couple actually kiss.
Blink and you'll miss it, but you'll see two men puckering up during a particularly poignant musical moment at the concert they're at.
And it wasn't just a token kiss or a misinterpreted short hair style, with this picture revealing the inclusion of same-sex couples in this mass make-out sesh was intentional.
A Disney fan account uploaded the clip to YouTube on February 22, with only a few keen viewers noticing it to begin with.
"Anyone else see those two dudes kissing? Well done, Disney," YouTuber Cooper Hudgens said.
"Disney is like: we're getting gay! Deal with it! ," DisneyKidsFOREVER added.
After a while word got around and the clip clocked up more than half a million views.
A few days later, the news spilled over to Twitter.
"First gay kiss. yaaaaaaaaaaas! Disney yaaaaaas!" @hmiguelsv said, articulating the sentiment with an appropriate level of decorum.
"Holy......is that a same sex kiss.....on a Disney XD show!?!......wow!, not even CN or Nickelodeon have the balls to do that," @GrantMcLellan9 says.
You can see several same-sex couples engaging in some age-appropriate tonsil hockey.
So far, the clip has attracted nearly 11,000 thumbs up, with just 361 people disliking it.
There are now hopes the same sex kiss will pave the way for Frozen sequel that answers the call to #giveElsaagirlfriend
