Zendaya has taken on her darkest role yet, playing a teenage drug addict in TV series Euphoria.

The former Disney child star took to Twitter on Sunday to share the trailer for the upcoming HBO series that revolves around the lives of a group of troubled teenagers.

Described by the network as "Kids meets Trainspotting", Euphoria is adapted from a 2012 Israeli TV series of the same name.

The original was based on the true story of a teenager who was murdered outside of a club, and chronicled the lives of the other club goers as they used drugs, sex and violence to escape reality following the tragedy.

It's bound to be a landmark role for Zendaya, with critics already tipping her for nominations at next year's Golden Globe and Emmy awards.
