Whitney Houston's iconic life and career is coming to Lifetime and we've got our hands on the first trailer.

Almost two years after her death, fans will see Whitney's (played by America's Next Top Model star Yaya DaCosta) rise to stardom along with snippets of her turbulent marriage to Bobby Brown in the highly-anticipated movie directed by actress Angela Bassett.

Earlier this year, Angela told E! News: "I think we as fans, audience... those that looked on - we thought we had some say in it. We really didn't have any say in their love affair.

"We really thought we did. I think it's a magnificent journey and I hope it will be a reflection into our own lives."

She added: "I just want them (the viewers) to go on the journey between Whitney and Bobby. I considered it a love story... I guess they had great business between them."

Before the trailer was even released, the biopic was criticised by Houston's mother Cissy who told Entertainment Tonight to "let her daughter rest".

Houston's 21-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown also lashed out on Twitter at Angela, after hearing she was never considered to be part of the film because she wasn't "an actress".

"Ha Ms Ang 'bassketcase' has such a damn nerve my lord," she tweeted. "At least the world doesn't mistake me for the wrong sex... she has some #XtraEquipment.
