The new Step Up? New Zealand hip-hop flick Born To Dance goes global…with Australian Idol's Stan Walker

It's not every day you see a multi-million-dollar New Zealand dance flick having its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

But for Born To Dance, this is one big chance to be the Kiwi answer to Step Up. Check out the trailer above – it's choice, bro.

Former Australian Idol star (and current X Factor NZ judge) Stan Walker is one of the cast members heading to Toronto for the world premiere this Friday, September 11.

The directorial debut of Whale Rider and Outrageous Fortune star Tammy Davis, Born To Dance is set in Auckland's North Shore and tells the story of a Maori teen (Tia-Taharoa Maipi) following his passion for hip-hop dancing, despite his parents' objections.

There's another reason for the Step Up comparisons other than the against-the-odds dance theme.

The film's moves were choreographed by Parris Goebel, who recently co-choreographed and acted in the fifth Step Up movie, Step Up: All In (2014). She's also worked with Jennifer Lopez and Cirque du Soleil.

Born To Dance opens in New Zealand cinemas on September 24. We hope it gets an Aussie release!
