White Lotus star reveals comment that prompted Aubrey Plaza's 'sour' reaction at SAG Awards: 'That's her biting wit'

During The White Lotus' win at the SAG Awards this week, fans noticed one celebrated cast member didn't appear to be as giddily excited as the rest of them.

Aubrey Plaza, 38, appeared noticeably irritated while the cast was on stage to accept the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

As F. Murray Abraham gave an acceptance speech on behalf of the cast, Plaza was seen pulling sour-looking faces, particularly after her co-star Jon Gries whispered something in her ear.

Now Gries, who plays Jennifer Coolidge's love interest in the show, has revealed the reason behind it all.

Gries, 65, told Page Six he leant over to encourage Plaza to move forward as she was "being blocked by about 15 people" and suggested she "look to the front".

He added that before she moved, he mentioned, "You might want to fix that first," referring to the underboob peeking out from under her Michael Kors dress.

From that moment, the Parks and Rec alum appeared irritated, particularly when Abraham's speech turned a little passionate.

"This is a wonderful time, but I'd like to send a prayer out to the earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey," Abrahams said on stage.

The comment saw most of the cast turn solemn, except for Plaza, whose face twisted in distaste.

Abraham didn't stop there, adding: "And [I'd like to send] a prayer for Ukraine and Russia," blessing himself, before yelling into the microphone, "Union forever!"

After that, the cast began hugging each other while Plaza found a free spot and looked into the camera, saying, "Jesus Christ".

Gries told Page Six that comment was about something else entirely – the remark about her dress.

"I think what she was intimating is 'why would that be a problem if my nipple is showing?'," he explains.

"That's her humour – she has that dry, deadpan wit; that's her biting wit."

Some fans speculated Plaza was annoyed at Gries for commenting on her appearance, but the actor dismissed the idea.

He revealed he texted Plaza the next morning after seeing the exchange had gone viral, upset that it turned into a "creepy moment."

"You weren't really upset?" he asked her, to which she replied, "No! Not at all!"

Plaza reportedly even thanked the actor for saving her from a major wardrobe malfunction.
