Ruby Rose defends Hurricane Harvey LGBTQ centre donation after backlash

Ruby Rose has joined the likes of Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, and Kevin Hart who have donated to the relief efforts of Hurricane Harvey, but her contribution has been met with backlash.

The Orange Is The New Black star donated $10,000 after music producer Jack Antonoff tweeted that he would match donations up to that amount to The Montrose Centre -- an LGBT community centre -- in Houston.

The centre's fundraising efforts, per its Hurricane Harvey fundraising page, "will focus primarily on empowering the LGBTQ community to rebuild after the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey, we serve all people in need regardless of their sexuality."

But many of 31-year-old Ruby's social media followers were quick to criticise her donation seemingly being directed towards LGBTQ people only.

"This is sad," one person commented on Ruby's post in which she announced her donation. "Helping only one group of people when the entire city needs help."

While another wrote, So are you only willing to help out gay people suffering from the floods in Houston?!?! You are a disgusting human being."

The comments caused the Australian actress to take a stand.

"I don't agree with the wording or personal attacks but I can understand the confusion if you are not aware of what these centers do," Ruby wrote alongside a slideshow of screenshots that showed some of the abuse she had received. "So swipe for my explanation."

The following slides went into detail about what the Montrose Centre actually does, including helping those outside of the LGBTI community.

"It is one of the most inclusive organisations I can of," Ruby began. "It is not as though they check how gay you are on entry. Unfortunately many organisations have in the past denied entry to people based on the above."

She went on to express regret that she had made her donation public, writing, "it's far more rewarding to donate anonymously by a long mile."
