Oscars 2019: Selma Blair makes emotional red-carpet appearance with a cane, her first since multiple sclerosis diagnosis

Selma Blair made her first red carpet appearance since revealing last year that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

The 46-year-old actress attended the Vanity Fair Oscars Party in Beverly Hills today, wearing a chiffon Ralph & Russo gown, but it was the walking stick she was holding that grabbed people's attention.

As she walked down the red carpet assisted by the cane, Blair was visibly emotional and appeared to shed a few tears. A member of her entourage then came over to help wipe them away.

"It took a lot to come out here," she was overheard telling photographers on the red carpet of her multiple sclerosis, a neurological brain disease that affects the central nervous system.

Although Blair walked the red carpet alone, her pals made sure she knew how loved she was by pimping out her cane.

"This is love 💓. @tombachik customizing my cane with my monogram and a real pink #diamond. How did I get so lucky?" Blair revealed on Instagram. "I wanted a special cane for #vanityfair dinner. So... @lyon_hearted went out and found patent leather and @bic_owen and he stitched it on. Hours of love put in. And then #tombachick made it especially magical. I burst into tears. These gifts to get me through. #subtle #chic#love. I can't thank these three enough. There are angels."

When the actress first made her diagnosis public last October, she admitted that she had trouble getting around and needed assistance.

"I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps," she wrote in a candid post. "But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don't know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best."

Fans first noticed Blair using a cane when she and her seven-year-old son Arthur attended Kim Kardashian's Christmas Eve party in December.
