Miley Cyrus says she's 'queer' and in 'hetero' marriage with Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus may now be in a heterosexual marriage with Liam Hemsworth, but the singer said she still identifies as queer.

The 26-year-old made the surprising revelation in the March issue of Vanity Fair, saying that she hopes her new union with the Aussie actor will help to defy marriage stereotypes.

"The reason that people get married sometimes can be old-fashioned, but I think the reason we got married isn't old-fashioned -- I actually think it's kind of New Age," said Cyrus in the cover story. "We're redefining, to be f---ing frank, what it looks like for someone that's a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship."

In the interview, Cyrus explained that she's never been one to fall in love based on gender, instead she falls in love with people. In the past, Cyrus has dated both men and women. During a break in her relationship with 29-year-old Hemsworth, she started dating Victoria's Secret model Stella Maxwell, 28.

"What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I'm in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality," Cyrus said.

"Relationships and partnerships in a new generation -- I don't think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender. Sex is actually a small part, and gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships."

The singer also opened up about why she and Hemsworth chose to tie the knot after years of claiming she didn't need a piece of paper to validate their relationship. And it has something to do with her "favourite woman in the world, Hillary Clinton," who helped her live out the phrase "stronger together."

"That'll make me get emotional. That's what she meant by it," Cyrus said. "Like, who gives a f--- if he's a guy, if I'm a girl, or if he was a woman -- who gives a f---? We really are stronger together. One is the loneliest number."
