'Married At First Sight' 2019: Why Jules and Cam struggled through the dinner parties

Áine Ryan

The resident lovebirds of Married At First Sight have explained how they had to take steps to avoid letting the dinner-party drama of the other couples affect their relationship.

Jules and Cam have had a drama-free run through MAFS' sixth season, putting them in stark contrast to some of their fellow castmates.

The dinner party during Wednesday night's episode -- where Ines and Sam were forced to deny their affair -- is particularly conflict-heavy, and the happier couples had to work to not get caught up in it all.

"You do get to a point in the experiment where [Cam and I] chose not to get involved," Jules tells 9Honey Celebrity. "It's sometimes childish, pathetic drama and we got to the point where we were like, 'You know what? I'm done. I'm not at school any more.' We decided we were only going to listen and have an opinion if it was actually something important.

"The toxicity was affecting us because you do get a bit emotionally involved."

Cam agrees, saying the only parts of their relationship on the show that aren't working were those affected by the other contestants.

"Our relationship on a day-to-day basis was magic and it was amazing, we were stronger than ever, but every time the social aspects of it came in that's when we said, 'OK, we do need to bring it back one step'.

"We had to keep focusing on supporting each other."

Despite their compatibility as a couple, they often didn't find that same connection with some of their fellow brides and grooms on the show.

"I'd leave a party in tears sometimes. Obviously we were forced together in a forced friendship, and it's not normal," says Jules. "To sit and scream [at a dinner party] -- it's really hard to explain if you haven't been inside it."
