American director M. Night Shyamalan has given an update on his longtime friend Bruce Willis amid his ongoing health battle.

"He has a very loving family," Shyamalan told People Magazine in a recent interview.

Willis is married to Emma Heming who he shares daughters Mabel and Evelyn with.

He also shares daughters, Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, with his first wife Demi Moore.

"They're doing the best they can," Shyamalan added.

Shyamalan worked with Willis again on the 2000 film Unbreakable and again on Glass in 2019 before the action star stepped away from acting.

The director previously told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that Willis "means the world" to him.

"I would do anything for him and his family, and it's been super tough for everybody involved," he spoke about the actor's diagnosis, adding he "had a lot of tears about it".

In 2022, Willis' family revealed he would be retiring from Hollywood after four decades as a working actor in light of an aphasia diagnosis.

"This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support," his family's statement said.

Less than a year later it was announced Willis had received a further diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

In September, the actor's wife opened up about how "hard" the diagnosis has been for both Willis and his loved ones.

"What I'm learning is that dementia is hard. It's hard on the person diagnosed. It's also hard on the family," Heming told Hoda Kotb on the Today show
