Katy Perry vows to ditch 'shopping addiction' to help save the environment

Katy Perry's been known over last decade for her extravagant fashion choices, in music videos, on the red carpet and just in every day life.

But now she's confronting just what her outfits are doing to the planet.

In an Instagram Live video, the 'Roar' singer says she's going to "ditch her shopping addiction".

"I used to be so addicted to shopping," she said. "I have become so aware of how wasteful I have been as a consumer with clothes.

"In my personal life I have pledged to myself that I am not really going to buy. I want to only buy out of necessity."

The 37-year-old went on to address the environmental impact of the fashion industry. "Clothes are in the top five of the most polluting things for our planet and I cannot be a part of that like I was, especially knowing my daughter is going to grow up in that."

Last year Perry welcomed her daughter Daisy with her fiancé Orlando Bloom.

Fast fashion has encouraged consumerism, with people buying 60% more clothes than they did in 2000 – and only keeping the garments for half as long. Stores like H&M and Zara release 15-20 new collections each year, encouraging the cycle of buying in excess.

Around 85% of all textiles are dumped into landfill each year -- by consumers and by waste from the fashion companies themselves.

The equivalent of one garbage truck full of clothes is burned or dumped in a landfill every second.

Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity's carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams.

Perry recently spoke about how her newborn daughter has changed her life.

She on Instagram: She changed my life and still continues to change my life," before sharing how she has learned to prioritise time with her child.

"I think that you realise that when you become a mother… you just have to focus on being a mum. And it's not because you don't love other people, it's not because of anything besides you just want to be a great mum."
