Jenna Bush offers tearful apology over 'racist' Golden Globes gaffe, Pharrell forgives her
One of the most talked about moments at this year's Golden Globes happened before the ceremony even began.
Jenna Bush, the 35-year-old daughter of former US president George W Bush, has apologised for a red-carpet slip-up involving Hidden Figures and Fences, two movies with largely black casts that had received multiple nominations.
She was interviewing musician Pharrell Williams on the red carpet for NBC when she made the error, referring to the nominated movie Hidden Figures as "Hidden Fences".
Naturally, social media went wild, with some branding Jenna a "racist" for her error.
"'Hidden Fences', a Marvel-esque team-up coming in 2017. Thanks Jenna Bush for making that wonderful, slightly racist, mistake," one viewer tweeted.
The contrite former First Daughter later apologised on the US Today show.
"If I offended people, I am deeply sorry. It was a mistake…I am not perfect," she said, while also explaining that she saw both movies (loved them, too) and has even interviewed actors from both films.
In other words, though regrettable, it was an honest mistake that could have happened to anyone...and it did.
Later in the night, while presenting the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, Birdman himself Michael Keaton made the exact same slip-up when announcing Hidden Figures nominee Octavia Spencer.
Later on, when TMZ asked Michael, 65, about his own error, he acknowledged the mistake.
"I know, I know," he said to the reporter who brought it up. "So let's make this official. I"m sorry. I apologise. I screwed it up. Are they making a big deal?"
When informed that the moment had indeed gone viral, Michael continued: "I'm a horrible person. I'm horrible...No, I am...I'm gonna sleep pretty well."
No tears from this one.
As for Jenna, she should wipe her eyes. Pharrell, 43, who co-composed the Golden Globe-nominated score for Hidden Figures, has officially accepted her apology.
"Don't worry @JennaBushHager! Everyone makes mistakes," he tweeted. "Hidden Fences does sound like an intriguing movie though. Just saying.."
We agree. And that's how you accept an apology.
