Harry Styles reflects on the one thing he'd tell Taylor Swift about their breakup

With his debut solo album just weeks away, there's a lot for Harry Styles to be excited for going forward. But that doesn't mean the former One Direction singer isn't willing to bring some closure to his past, namely with ex Taylor Swift. The 23-year-old 'Sign of the Times' crooner opened up about his relationship with Taylor, 27, in a lengthy new interview with Rolling Stone.

Interviewed by Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe, Harry came clean about what it was like trying to explore his brief romance with Taylor while being in the public eye. Upon seeing the infamous photos of him and Taylor on their second date in Central Park on December 2, 2012, he explained: "When I see photos from that day, I think: Relationships are hard, at any age."

The pair dated for two only months, breaking up by January 2013. But the romance was rumoured to have inspired some of Taylor's biggest hits, including 'Out of the Woods' and 'Style'. Harry maintained that he didn't know if those anthems were about him explicitly, but he's a fan nonetheless.

"I write from my experiences; everyone does that. I'm lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs," he said. “That's what hits your heart. That's the stuff that's hardest to say, and it's the stuff I talk least about. That's the part that's about the two people. I'm never going to tell anybody everything."

And as it turns out, if he had to speak to Taylor again about their breakup, he'd only have good things to say to the pop star.

"Certain things don't work out. There's a lot of things that can be right, and it's still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together," Harry revealed.

"You're celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than 'this didn't work out, and that's bad.' And if you run into that person, maybe it's awkward, maybe you have to get drunk ... but you shared something. Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it's the best s--t ever. So thank you."

Harry's self-titled debut solo album drops on May 12, 2017.
