David Campbell shares his top 5 Christmas films: 'Many people may disagree'

'Tis the season to forget about 2020, zone out, eat junk and watch Christmas movies!

Last year, I gave a recommended list of music and this year I have turned my mistletoe-loving gaze to the silver screen.

Now, many people may disagree with this list or start yelling "Where is Love Actually?" — however, let me stress, this is merely a jumping-off point.

I will mainly be sharing what I consider all-time classics you should have seen at least once by now. It seems about a hundred or so new ones get made every year but they just don't cut it. Sorry, Last Christmas.

Other lists out there have crazy movies on them. Just because a movie is set in December, does not mean Santa puts it on the Good List. I mean, Eyes Wide Shut is not a Christmas film in my opinion!

Here we go.

1. Home Alone

The fable of Kevin is now 30 years old. Can you believe it? This is one which gets better as you get older and become a parent. Especially if your house is absolute chaos at the year's end. Kids love it. As do mums and dads. Wet Bandits? Not so much.

2. Elf

Will Ferrell has never been more endearing than as Buddy the Elf. It's simple fish out of water stuff but it makes me laugh every single time. Also, any movie which introduces children to the comedy genius of Bob Newhart is A-OK with me.

3. Die Hard

Now much to most of the world's chagrin, last year, Bruce Willis claimed this is not a Christmas movie. With all due respect, he is wrong. So wrong. Nakatomi Towers, Hans Gruber, "Now I have a machine gun. Ho! Ho! Ho!" is now synonymous with the Dad's Festive viewing. It has even been turned into an illustrated picture book. Yippee Ki Yay, Mr Willis!

4. The Nightmare Before Christmas

To be fair, you could have started repeated viewing of this movie straight after Halloween. My kids have. It is the perfect connector between the two dates. A perfect musical which will get the whole family singing 'What's This?' relentlessly at anything they see for months.

5. It's a Wonderful Life

There is a reason this Frank Capra black-and-white film is considered a classic. Somehow, the story of George Bailey being shown how much better the world is with him in it may indeed be the perfect film for 2020. It will melt even the hardest of hearts.

I am leaving it at a top 5, though I have many which could have easily made the list like, A Muppet Christmas Carol, A Charlie Brown Christmas, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and Gremlins.

The point is, it's time to switch off our stress and realise, this year is almost done. So snuggle up with your loved ones and get watching.

And as Macaulay Culkin mimes in Home Alone 2… "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals."
