Transgender US soldier Chelsea Manning poses in glam swimsuit: 'What freedom looks like'

Chelsea Manning is on a bright, new path.

The transgender US Army soldier shared a liberating photo of herself to Instagram on August 10.

Chelsea (born: Bradley Manning) spent seven years in prison for releasing over 700,000 documents to WikiLeaks in 2010. WikiLeaks published the materials between 2010 and 2011.

The photo appeared to show her breaking free from her past, running her hands through her hair as she walked along the beach in a red one-piece swimsuit.

Captured by world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, the photo is part of a feature interview appearing in the September issue of Vogue.

"Guess this is what freedom looks like," she captioned the pic.

The article followed the 29-year-old as she got ready to attend an after-party for the Lambda Literary Awards, which honours LGBTQ writers.

In the piece, she recalled her struggle to find acceptance in her hometown of Crescent, Oklahoma.

"I knew that I was different," Chelsea told Vogue. "I gravitated more toward playing house, but the teachers were always pushing me toward playing the more competitive games with the boys."

"I spent so much time wondering, What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I fit in?"
