Britney Spears has released a heartbreaking audio message in which she shared her sadness about being estranged from her two teenage sons.

During a six-part audio recording posted on Instagram, the singer talked about a range of issues in her life, including her 13-year conservatorship and attending equine therapy sessions.

However, it was the admission about her fractured relationships with sons Sean, 16, and Jayden, 15, that was most concerning.

"I used to have my kids, at one point, more than Kevin," Spears said of her custody arrangement with her ex-husband, former backup dancer Kevin Federline.

"People don't remember that part because they always focus on the negative, but when they were six to nine years old, I had them 70 per cent of the time."

The 40-year-old said that since her sons have chosen not to see her in the last six months, she has "felt like a huge part of me has died".

"Like literally, I have no purpose anymore. They were my joy, they were my everything ... that was what I lived for," she said. "And then all of a sudden, they were gone, and I was like, 'Oh my God, did my heart just stop beating?'"

"Honestly, I don't understand how it's just so easy for them just to cut me off like that. I don't understand it."

Spears said she was not happy with her ex and their sons' recent claims she's seeking attention on social media. The singer said she may come across that way because she's frustrated and has a lot of pent-up anger towards her father Jamie, who had the authority to control all aspects of her life.

"With my kids now, making the claims that 'She's not good enough, she wants attention…' Yeah, I do want to be heard, and I'm angry," Spears explained. "All I know is my love for my children is more than anything, and I'm sorry if I hurt you guys in any way."

"Until then, Jayden and Preston, I adore you. I was told you guys have blocked me," she said"[But] I'm so blessed to even call you mine, and I just want you to know I apologise, my ignorance in saying 'so' to you guys -- that was meant for my father."
