Speaking to The Indian Express, her brother-in-law Sanjay Kapoor confirmed the star’s passing.

"Yes, it is true that Sridevi passed away. I just landed here, I was in Dubai and now I am flying back to Dubai," said in a statement.

With a career spanning fifty years, from the age of four, Sridevi starred in nearly 300 films including popular Bollywood hits like Mr India and Sadma. A veteran of Indian cinema, Sridevi was long considered as the first female superstar of India and only one of a handful of female stars who didn’t need a male hero by her side in order to score big box office hits.

Since her sudden passing, crowds have been forming outside the late actress' home whilst tributes from Bollywood stars and politicians have been pouring in.

Prime Minster of India Narendra Modi wrote, "she was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances."

Fellow actor Aamir Khan was one of the first to express his sorry in her passing.
