Anne Hathaway contradicts 'accepted' gender narrative: 'I need my husband'

Anne Hathaway needs her husband, and she's not afraid to shout it out loud.

The 34-year-old actress, who has long been an advocate for gender equality, has opened up to ELLE magazine about the profound way her husband, Adam Shulman, has shaped her.

"He changed my ability to be in the world comfortably," she told the magazine.

The Oscar winner -- who welcomed a son, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, last March with Adam -- also explained the importance of valuing her husband.

"I think the accepted narrative now is that we, as women, don't need anybody," Anne said. "But I need my husband. His unique and specific love has changed me."

The actress went on to reveal how motherhood inspired her to become a UN Goodwill Ambassador to advocate for paid parental leave in the US, and why she thinks "mummy guilt is invented nonsense".

"I can’t believe we don’t already have it," Anne said.

"When [my son] Johnny was a week old and I was holding him and I was in the ninth level of ecstasy, I just all of a sudden thought, 'Mummy guilt is invented nonsense.'"

She further explained, "We're encouraged to judge each other, but we should be turning our focus to the people and institutions who should be supporting us and currently aren't."

Anne, who recently signed on for the female-driven Ocean's Eight reboot, also touched on Hollywood's equality problem.

“Hollywood is not a place of equality,” Anne said. “I don’t say that with anger or judgment; it’s a statistical fact."

She explained how her involvement with Ocean's Eight had really brought home the need for change.

"Even though I’ve been in some female-centric films, I’ve never been in a film like this. It just kind of makes you aware of the ways you sort of unconsciously change yourself to fit certain scenarios."
