A young blind and autistic man's audition on America's Got Talent leaves everyone in tears

There wasn't a dry eye in the house when a blind and autistic contestant performed on America's Got Talent last night.

Accompanied onto the stage by his mum, 22-year-old Kodi Lee received a standing ovation as he played the piano while singing a beautiful rendition of Donny Hathaway's 'A Song For You'.

"We found out that he loved music really early on," his mum Tina explained before the performance. "He listened and his eyes just went huge, and he started singing, and that's when I was in tears… I just realised, oh my God, he's an entertainer.

"Through music and performing he was able to withstand living in this world because when you're autistic, it's really hard to do what everyone else does. It's saved his life, playing music," she added of her son, who was born with optic nerve hypoplasia and required life-saving surgery at just five days old.

Judges Simon Cowell, Gabrielle Union, Julianne Hough and Howie Mandel were all moved and blown away by Kodi, with each star praising the young performer's talents. Union — a newcomer in the panel — was so moved she hit the coveted golden buzzer, which automatically sent Kodi to the next round.

"First of all, I will tell you, that all four judges and everyone in this room were up on their feet," said Mendel. "Not only did we feel the authenticity of what you do, but you're a great inspiration and a great talent, and it was amazing."

Veteran judge Cowell sang the same sentiments, telling Kodi, "What just happened was extraordinary. I'm going to remember this moment for the rest of my life."

Meanwhile, Hough could barely speak through her tears.

"I know everybody needs a voice and an expression, and I really feel your heart, your passion," she said. "Your voice blew everyone away, so I just want to say that I heard you, and I felt you, and that was beautiful."
