Owner stunned to learn value of unwanted engagement gift she kept hidden in a cupboard on Antiques Roadshow
We've all received presents we don't quite love, but it may pay to hold on to them anyway... even if you have to keep them hidden in a cupboard for decades.
In episode of Antiques Roadshow, a Newcastle local explained she was gifted two candlesticks by her husband's grandmother for their engagement.

"Do you love them and can't live without them?" queried silver expert Duncan Campbell.
"No!" the woman replied with a laugh.
She was diplomatic as she explained that she didn't "hate" them, but she had kept them out of sight for years. Watch her full explanation in the video above.
These hidden candlesticks held a hefty value. Nine
"They've just been lying in a cupboard," she admitted.

Duncan said despite her not liking them, the candlesticks were made by one of the major silversmiths in England, which the owner was surprised by.
"They're made by a man called AE Jones, who started in about 1904 and was a major force in arts and crafts silversmithing, mostly from a design point of view but also manufacturing," he explained.
On the bottom, the candlesticks were dated as being made in 1919.
"You might not like them all that much, but let me tell you, there are lots of people around that do," Duncan said.

Duncan gave his valuation as £800-£1200 (up to AU$2300). Not bad for a forgotten gift!
The news surprised the owner – and definitely helped her warm up to the candlesticks after so long.

"I might like them a bit more now," she joked.
"Will they get a clean? Will they come out on the dining table?" Duncan asked.
"Yeah... maybe," she chuckled.

This isn't the first time an owner had been lost for words when learning the value of an unexpected item.
