The ten best-paying jobs in Australia, according to the tax office
The Australian Taxation Office has released its annual statistics for 2022-23.
While much of the data is focused on how much tax revenue was collected for that financial year (hint: it's a lot), it also reveals how much, on average, someone in each profession earns.
Here are the 10 best-paying ones.
10. Financial investment advisor or manager
Kicking off the top 10 are financial investment advisors and managers.
More than 20,000 Australians included themselves in this profession, and they took home an average of $191,986.
9. Chief executive officer or managing director
It turns out Australia has a lot of chief executives and managing directors – just over 230,000 of them.
And they're doing fairly well for themselves, reporting an average taxable income of $194,987.
8. Judicial or other legal professional
Legal workers are the first group of employees to crack the $200,000 mark, with an average income of $206,408.
7. Mining engineer
The only job on the list that could be considered blue-collar, there were slightly more than 10,000 mining engineers in 2022-23.
The average taxable income for that group was marginally higher than what legal workers had, coming in at $206,423.
6. Other medical professionals
Healthcare professionals dominate the best-paid jobs in Australia, starting with this rather generic category.
Other medical professionals earned an average of $259,802.
5. Psychiatrist
Starting off the top five are psychiatrists.
The more than 3000 such professionals took home an average $286,146.
4. Internal medicine specialist
Staying in healthcare, we have the first profession to breach the $300,000 mark.
There were more than 10,000 internal medicine specialists recorded by the ATO, and they earned a very healthy $342,457.
3. Financial dealer
The roughly 5000 financial dealers in Australia were the best-earning professionals outside the medical and healthcare sector, taking home an average of $355,233.
2. Anaesthetist
The two best-paying professions are closely related.
Coming in at number two are anaesthetists, whose average taxable income in 2022-23 was an eye-watering $447,193.
