American teen takes on Instagram after 'too fat' photo gets deleted

A 19-year-old university student from the US state of Ohio has accused Instagram of discriminating against plus-sized people after it removed a photo she took of herself in a bra and boy shorts.

Samm Newman said she grew up being bullied at high school for her weight and found that Instagram was a "safe place" where she felt comfortable posting body images.

But the social media platform deleted the above image and deactivated her account.

She accused Instagram of only cracking down on "anyone who doesn't fit their idea of normal".

"I didn’t find [the briefs] or the bra at all inappropriate," Ms Newman, an Australian size 28, told an NBC News affiliate.

"They covered me entirely and I've seen pictures like that all over Instagram."
