Well, it's official – time travellers do not walk amongst us.

The disappointing news comes via a study from the US that saw researchers trawl the internet for evidence of those who mention events before they occur.

The study's author, physicist Robert Nemiroff, and his team used search engines to see if anyone had mentioned Pope Francis or the comet ISON before the terms existed.

This is not the first time science has tried to find evidence for time travellers.

Physicist Stephen Hawking held a party for time travellers in July, 2012, and only sent out invitations afterwards. Sadly, nobody turned up.

Professor Nemiroff told Popular Science that he came up with the idea for the study during a poker game with students.
