Sterile fruit flies have been released in parts of Adelaide to eradicate an outbreak of the pests.

Nine million sterile male flies were released on Tuesday into the Clarence Park and Highgate areas, in the city's south, after a series of outbreaks, Primary Industries and Regions SA said.

"These insects will mate with surviving female Mediterranean fruit flies in the outbreak areas and eradicate any remaining wild population," Biosecurity SA's executive director Will Zacharin said.
