Smartphone battery charges in just 30 seconds

It's the next-generation smartphone battery that goes from zero to fully charged in under 30 seconds.

Israeli company StoreDot showed off the device at Microsoft's Think Next Conference in Tel Aviv on Monday.

A demonstration video showed a Samsung S4 phone going from a dead battery to full power in under 30 seconds.

The battery is currently only a prototype and the company has predicted it will take three years before it hits retail shelves.

"We think we can integrate a battery into a smartphone within a year and have a commercially ready device in three years," founder Dr Dom Myersdorf told the BBC.

He said the batteries would be twice as expensive as the ones currently on the market as they are likely to be 30-40 percent more expensive to manufacture.

StoreDot uses a new battery chemistry that features nanodots derived from bioorganic material.

The nano-crystals were first identified in research being done for Alzheimer's disease at Tel Aviv University 10 years ago.
