South Australia's tourism commission has revealed it paid celebrities up to $750 each to tweet about Kangaroo Island.

The list of 16 celebrities paid to promote the SA holiday destination include celebrity chef Pete Evans, former Adelaide Cabaret Festival director Kate Ceberano and Channel 7 Sunrise presenter James Tobin.

Opposition treasury spokesman Rob Lucas asked the South Australian Tourism Commission to release the payment details.

"The government was leading people to believe that these people were spontaneously or unprompted in endorsing Kangaroo Island," he told AAP.
